Annual Performance - Romeo and Juliet

17th Days of Choreographic Creation

Romeo and Juliet by the Rosella Hightower National Dance School

On the occasion of the 17th Days of Choreographic Creation, on March 27 at 8:30 PM, at the Debussy Theater of the Palais des Festivals and Congresses, the Rosella Hightower National Dance School will present an original creation inspired by one of William Shakespeare's greatest masterpieces: Romeo and Juliet.

The performance will offer a bold reinterpretation set to the music of Sergei Prokofiev and a staging blending classical and contemporary dance, adapted to the talents and sensibilities of students aged 11 to 20.

The ballet will reveal iconic scenes such as the Capulet Ball, the Meeting of Romeo and Juliet, the Lovers' Marriage, the Death of Tybalt and Mercutio, and the tragic ending. It will explore the timeless themes of Shakespeare's tragedy: love in its power and fragility, youth and its consuming passions, the complexity of family ties, fate as an inescapable force and free will in the face of it, as well as revenge and its destructive consequences.

The love duet, with the iconic pas de deux from Romeo and Juliet by Jean-Christophe Maillot, created for the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, will be a tribute to its elegance and modernity, and a highlight of this Romeo and Juliet.
